With the ongoing climate changes and the transition to renewable energy, the need for a behavioural change with regards to energy consumption is needed. The Danish island Bornholm has for the past years staged the setting for a large scale demonstration project, EcoGrid EU, in which 2.000 households and small businesses of the island have been equipped with smart equipment that, not only has allowed the local energy company to draw data on the consumption every fifth minute, it has also been able to control heat pumps and electrical heating in the households. One of the main motives for the participation of the project has been the economic incentive, where fluctuating energy prices have been one of the drivers for behavioural change.

Based on the analysis of qualitative empirical field studies of participants from the demonstration project EcoGrid EU, based in Bornholm Denmark, the author seeks to identify pitfalls in communicating the fluctuating energy prices.

Through desk research of the digital communication as well as the analysis of the field visits, the author has identified problems and formulated design challenges in order to solve these.

Through Interaction Design techniques the problems have been explored by sketching and prototyping. The solution, that is yet to be tested, lies within designing an Eco-Feedback System that, with the aid of IoT, is able to communicate the price forecast for the day without interrupting the flow of the user.
